NORTHBROOK

An elderly man died Christmas Day when he lost control of his car and crashed into a pole less than a block from his daughter’s Northbrook home.

Edward Niewiarowski, 80, was driving a gray Nissan west in the 3500 block of Techny Road near Northbrook when he veered off the road and crashed into a pole, Cook County Sheriff’s spokesman Frank Bilecki said.

Witnesses told deputies they did not see brake lights, and investigators have not been able to talk to Niewiarowski’s wife, who was found unconscious in the passenger seat, Bilecki said.

The couple were going to visit their daughter and son-in-law when they crashed about 50 yards from their home, Bilecki said.

Niewiarowski, of the 7900 block of Grand Avenue in Elmwood Park, was taken to Glenbrook Hospital, where he died at 4:49 p.m. Tuesday, the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office said. An autopsy determined he died from multiple injuries from an automobile striking a fixed object and the death was ruled an accident.

Authorities said Niewiarowski underwent heart surgery in February.

His wife was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge with non-life-threatening injuries, but sheriff’s police have been unable to talk to her, Bilecki said. ~.
