NorthShore hospitals deliver first two babies 41 minutes into 2013

EVANSTON — NorthShore University HealthSystem delivered two New Year’s babies within 41 minutes of the start of 2013.
At 12:39 a.m. Tuesday, Highland Park Hospital welcomed its first baby, a girl named Naija Niyogi to parents Shiladitya Niyogi and Aindrila Gupta, of Highland Park.
Chicago parents Donald and Sheryl Chambers celebrated the birth of their son, Samson, two minutes later at the system’s Evanston Hospital.
But the North Shore babies were beat out by at least three other Chicago area babies for the title of first baby of the year.
It only took eight minutes for the first baby to make headlines at Saint Anthony Hospital in Chicago, where Aydan Alvarado arrived into the world. Weighing in at 7 pounds, 3 ounces with a time of birth clocked at 12:08 a.m., baby Aydan was welcomed by parents Georgina Acosta and Fernando Alvarado.
Also greeting the early moments of 2013 was Hope Fiddan, born at 12:13 a.m. at St. Alexius Hospital in Hoffman Estates.
At Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, the hospital announced its first baby of the year was born via cesarean at 12:23 a.m.
Robyn Ali, public affairs and marketing coordinator for the hospital, reported that the girl weighed in at 5 pounds, 12 ounces.
She is the daughter of Arlington Heights residents Aileen Herrera and Eduardo Jiminez, and joins two older sisters.
Ali said Herrera is recovering from the surgery and the baby is doing well. The baby’s name was not released.
The hospital gave the baby’s parents a gift basket that includes bottles, bibs and booties, Ali said.
The 2013 crop of New Year’s babies didn’t come quite as close to midnight as previous years. Last year, two babies were born at two Chicago-area hospitals within 1/10th of a second of midnight. In 2011, a baby girl was born at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood at 12:00:01 a.m.
