Annual event highlights needs of Maryville Crisis Nursery

The Friends of the Crisis Nursery know how to host a luncheon.
And it wasn’t because of the salad served at the Sunset Ridge Country Club May 10 — though it was delicious, and I’m only a tad embarrassed I was the only member of the clean plate club at my table.
Rather, it was the special cause that brought more than 150 women to buy raffle tickets and watch a fashion show presented by Winnetka’s neapolitan collection.
Wes Gordon’s show itself was a tad unusual because the designer showed looks from two seasons and had to improvise a bit. And from the crowd’s reaction, his finale hit the mark.
“We didn’t originally show it that way,” Gordon said about a sweeping floor-length skirt from his fall 2012 collection. “Many garments are out on shoots, so we had to restyle it [with a different blouse] and it really looked cool.”
But beyond the fashion was raising money for and awareness of the Crisis Nursery at Maryville and how Aileen Robinson of the Chicago Police Department described its necessary existence.
“We get 600 calls a day due to domestic violence. Six years ago we had no options. Thanks to all of you we have a tangible resource and a safe place for children. ... We need you, we need the Crisis Nursery, so please keep coming back,” she said.
