The Event: On May 5 Barrington Children’s Charities second annual Run for the Roses Derby Party inside the Millrose Restaurant in South Barrington featured a hat parade to rival Britain.
Every type of feathery chapeau, bonnet and fascinator was in full bloom — sometimes literally — as more than 285 attendees got into the spirit of the Kentucky Derby. The pageantry extended even to the men, who seemed only too happy to escort their dates while sporting everything from natty newsboy caps to full jockey uniforms.
Cause Célèbre: “This year we’ve assembled an amazing planning committee of local women to manage all the special details [and] I am just overjoyed and really proud,” said co-chairman Darby Hills.
In 2010, the Hills family founded Barrington Children’s Charities to “protect, care for and prepare children for the future.”
Proceeds from the derby party will be disbursed among a variety of charities, with the bulk going to fund Blessings in a Backpack, a federal free and reduced-price meal program that aims to fill in the gaps for children and families who are struggling to put food on the table during the weekends when school lunches are not available.
“Each child in need will receive a backpack full of nutritious food for every weekend of the school year,” said Tom Hills, chairman of the board.
Event co-chairman Kirsten Baseley noted that, “There are a lot of people in the community who are not affluent and need help. Our mission is to give back financially, emotionally, educationally to help the children, specifically in District 220.”
In spring 2012, BCC dispersed $50,580 in grants. A nonprofit charitable organization, it was created to positively impact the lives of children in the Barrington and surrounding communities.
Bottom Line: The derby party raised more than $50,000 for Barrington Children’s Charities.
