The Event: Knowing that cancer does not discriminate against any demographic, including age, the Lynn Sage Cancer Research Foundation threw its Summer Soiree on July 25 to bring in a new generation of supporters. Roka Akor Sake & Shochu lounge in Chicago served as a chic backdrop for the sold-out event which drew more than 200 young professionals.
Cause célèbre: “We’re here to educate people about breast cancer research and get them involved in charity,” explained event co-chairman Julie Novack.
Co-chairman Melissa Lederer’s mother passed away from breast cancer. “It’s a very important cause for me and you’d be surprised how more and more young people are touched in some way by breast cancer, whether it be a grandmother, parent, aunt or friend,” she said.
“It was very important to us to get a lot of young people involved and now we have turned it over to the next generation,” said Lili Ann Zisook, LSCRF co-founder and member since 1986.
Ninety-four percent of the funds raised by LSCRF goes directly to research. “It is a true research-oriented foundation and that’s why I’m involved,” said event co-chairman Tom Ordover who lost his mother to cancer. “I feel like we are really affecting change.”
Roka Akor founder, Dr. John Kapoor, who lost his wife to breast cancer, donated his restaurant for the event and was also the title sponsor, having given an additional $5,000.
“Anything we can do [against] breast cancer, we are committed to doing. A lot of progress has been made and I think we are getting closer, we just have to run to the finish line,” said Kapoor.
Bottom line: The event raised $25,000 for the Lynn Sage Cancer Research Foundation.
