Cosmic Skating
Cosmic Skating offers cool fun at the Northbrook Sports Center from 8 to 10 p.m. on Friday with music, special effects and theatrical lighting. On Feb. 10, a Valentine’s Cosmic Skate Party features DJ music, games, prizes and two hours of skate time. Non-skaters can celebrate in the Club Cosmic room. All Star Hockey Games
Everyone is invited to watch exciting high school hockey, when the Northbrook Sports Center hosts the METRO North All Star Hockey games on Sunday. The Jr. Varsity game begins at 4:40 p.m., followed by the Varsity Game at 6:30 p.m. All Star teams are selected by the first 10 league games of the regular season; each team receives players based on its ranking. Cross-Country Ski Lessons
Learn the basic moves of cross-country skiing, and develop speed and technique with lessons at Sportsman’s Country Club from 10 a.m. to noon on Jan. 28 and Saturdays in February. weather permitting; equipment rental is available. For information, visit nbparks.org or call (847) 291-2351, ext. 3.
“Bunnicula” on Stage
The musical comedy “Bunnicula” is on stage at the Northbrook Theatre with performances at 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturdays through Feb. 25. The story is based on the children’s book series about a mysterious bunny. Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 online or at the door, with party packages available. After each performance, the audience can meet the professional cast. Tickets are on sale at northbrooktheatre.org, in the Leisure Center, and by phone at (847) 291-2367.
Daddy-Daughter Dance
The annual Daddy-Daughter Dance from the Northbrook Park District offers an evening of music and memories from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Feb. 10 at the Northbrook Hilton. This year’s theme is “Princesses around the World.” The fairy-tale evening includes DJ music, appetizers and desserts, games, a photo booth, a commemorative T-shirt and tiara for each princess, and boutonnieres for the princes. Friday is the deadline for the early fee of $65 per adult/child couple for Northbrook residents and $75 for non-residents. Additional daughters can attend for $25. Discounts
Registration continues for 2012 Summer Camps and Workshops, and most programs offer a discount for early registration. Greenbriar
Programs
Family Sports Nights, indoor soccer, wiffle ball, cheerleading and tumbling are just a few of the programs that begin in February at the new Greenbriar Gym. Park Larks
Performances
The Park Larks will perform at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at Sedgebrook in Lincolnshire. The Northbrook Park District choir rehearses on Thursday mornings at the Leisure Center, under the direction of former concert pianist Evelyn Binz. AARP Driver Safety
An AARP driving program from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Feb. 6 and 7 can guide adults toward safer driving habits. Drivers who complete the two-day course may qualify for a discount on car insurance. The fee is $12 for AARP members, $14 for non-members.
Lunch and a Movie
Lunch and a Movie features “Jane Eyre” on the big screen at noon on Feb. 9 at the Leisure Center. Adults can enjoy a catered lunch with company and watch the romantic drama about a governess who works for a wealthy man hiding a terrible secret. The fee is $6.
Scrapbook Art
Well-known local crafter Lindsey Reid will conduct a scrapbook workshop from 10 to 11 a.m. on Feb. 10 at the Leisure Center. Adults should bring photos and mementos; embellishments and ideas will be supplied. Each participant will create a page to save in a scrapbook and learn to make a personalized card. The fee is $9 for Senior Center members and $15 for non-members. Registration is accepted at the Senior Center Office, online at nbparks.org, and by phone at (847) 291-2988.
Jim Kendros
Presents: The
Romantic Piano
Musical historian Jim Kendros will celebrate the most romantic time of the year with beautiful melodies for piano from the 19th century, from 1 to 2 p.m. on Feb. 10. The fee is $5 for Senior Center members and $9 for non-members.
Valentine Luncheon and Book
Dramatization
Actress, singer and writer Jenny Riddle portrays three fascinating women who survived life’s challenges, in a one-woman show at 11:30 a.m. Feb. 14 at the Leisure Center. Riddle combines her love of books and love of performing to bring three stories to life. Lunch will be served before the performance. Open Art Studio
Looking for a place to be creative? Art studio time is free to Northbrook residents from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday nights at the Leisure Center. Adults can paint in the company of others; the Park District provides tables, stools and easels. The fee for nonresidents is $5 per day.
