Cantorial Choir scheduled to perform
The legendary Cantor Naftali Herstik will conduct the Tel Aviv Cantorial Institute Choir for one night only at 8 p.m. Saturday at Lubavitch Chabad of Northbrook, 2095 Landwehr Road.
A cantor leads Jewish services with traditional melodies and arrangements. Cantor Herstik is widely considered the greatest pulpit artist of his generation. For over 30 years, Cantor Herstik has been the chief cantor of the Great Synagogue of Jerusalem where worshippers have included presidents and prime ministers. He has also recorded albums and performed in prestigious symphony halls in Europe and the United States.
The Tel Aviv Cantorial Institute Choir has been acclaimed as a phenomenon among Jewish choirs. It is an exceptional ensemble of 30 “star” cantors from Israel’s principal cantorial school conducted by Cantor Herstik. This all-male choir is known for its sensational Bel Canto blended tone ranging from an angelic pianissimo to a glorious fortissimo. The Choir’s repertoire covers classic cantorial compositions, Hebrew and Yiddish melodies and Hassidic Zemirot in an immaculate style and warmth rarely heard in concert.
Tickets are $15 in advance or $18 at the door. For more information please call (847) 564-8770 www.chabadnorthbrook.com.
Relay For Life to kick-off annual event
The American Cancer Society Relay For Life of North Shore will hold its annual Kick-off event at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Schram Chapel in the Glen (1799 Patriot Blvd., Glenview). Friends, neighbors, cancer survivors, caregivers and anyone interested in learning more about Relay For Life are encouraged to attend.
The Kick-off event offers information about the American Cancer Society’s mission of saving lives faster by helping people stay well, helping people get well, finding cures and fighting back. Refreshments will be served and the registration fee will be waived for teams who sign up before or during the Kick-off event.
Relay For Life is an overnight event where teams of local businesses, schools, churches, community groups and families build awareness and raise funds — prior to and at the event — to fight cancer. While the main objective of Relay For Life is to raise money for cancer research and cancer patients, the event helps spread cancer awareness, celebrate the lives of survivors, remember those who lost their lives to cancer and unite a community in the fight against cancer.
This year’s American Cancer Society Relay For Life of North Shore has yet to be finalized.
Volunteers are needed to organize and recruit teams, secure community support, coordinate logistics, obtain refreshments and prizes, assist with publicity and plan entertainment activities for this exciting and energizing event.
For more information on the Relay For Life Kick-off celebration, contact the American Cancer Society (847) 328-5147, opt. 3 or visit Relayforlife.org/NorthShoreIL. Teams may register on-line anytime.
