Pet adoption event set for this weekend

Wags on Willow, an upscale pet boutique offering food, fashion and fun items for dogs and cats, will host two adoption events this weekend.
The Orphans of the Storm, a Riverwoods shelter, will introduce from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at least two canines looking for families.
And Heartland Animal Shelter, a Northbrook shelter, will bring some of its wards from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.
“These events will allow potential adopters to meet available pets, as well as learn more about the organizations and the process of pet adoption,” said Mary Bowler, owner of the shop that opened last October near Whole Foods in the Willow Festival shopping center in Northbrook.
“Even if potential adopters are not ready to take home a furry friend immediately, they are encouraged to stop by and learn more as they plan for the future,” Bowler said.
Bowler worked as a Realtor in Chicago before moving to the area in 2010. When she noticed a lack of pet boutiques, she decided to do something about it.
Her shop offers natural foods, treats, apparel and gift items. She also plans to add grooming this year, and maybe some merchandise for birds, because of customer requests.
Bowler said she — and her pug, Sushi, the shop’s mascot — would like to see the shelters visit at least once a month.
“The organizations that we work with have seen a decline in adoptions given the current economy. They need their community’s help more than ever. We are proud to do what we can to help more pets find their ‘forever homes,’” she added.
Jackie Borchew, Orphans of the Storm’s director of community outreach, will bring Mojo, a gentle Chihuahua mix found as a stray, and Winston, a laid back 3-year-old basset hound mix who knows commands.
The Orphans of the Storm adoption fee is $90, plus a charge for whatever final vaccinations are needed.
Heartland’s fees range from $150 to $350 for dogs and puppies, and from $75 to $125 for cats and kittens.
Cash and credit cards are accepted by both shelters.
