Northbrook residents are invited this weekend to salute the veterans who have served the country in wars past and present.
They may visit the Field of Honor on the Village Green, which will be flying 1,901 flags symbolizing the year the village was incorporated as Shermerville in commemoration of those who have given their lives.
Visitors may stop by from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday through Monday, as well as attending the nightly sunset services at 8 p.m. And on Saturday and Sunday, they will hear musical entertainment at the Gazebo.
Residents also may want to be a part of the flag posting that will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday when the symbols will be placed on more than 150 veterans’ graves at Sacred Heart Cemetery on Lee Road, north of Dundee Road.
The event usually takes one to two hours and the closing ceremony will conclude with taps.
Then, the Memorial Day Parade will step off at 10:30 a.m. Monday from the corner of Cherry and Western. It will continue east on Cherry/Church to the Village Green, Shermer and Meadow Roads.
Bands from local schools will march and perform following the parade. The American Legion’s Memorial Day ceremony will take place immediately afterward.
Residents are asked to fly American flags all weekend to support the Flags Around Northbrook program. Distressed flags may be brought to the Field of Honor event for proper disposal. Purchased Field of Honor flags may be picked up 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday.
Also, volunteers are needed to assemble flags from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, and 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sunday. Individuals are also needed for overnight security.
