Girls’ golf socials

Girls just want to have fun — with golf! Aug. 11 is the last Girls’ Golf Social of the season from the Northbrook Park District at Anetsberger Golf Course from 10 a.m. to noon. Girls can learn the rules, pace of play and basic shots from Sportsman’s Country Club Golf staff, assisted by members of the Glenbrook North High School Girls’ Golf Team. Ages 5-16 are welcome; the fee of $15 includes green fees and a snack. Register in advance by calling the Golf Shop at (847) 291-2971.

Evening pool fun

Super Soak Sundays welcome families to The Northbrook Sports Center Pool from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Aug. 12. Present a pool pass or purchase twilight admission. For more information, visit nbparks.org or call (847) 291-2980.

Batting Cages

Batter up! The batting cages at Techny Prairie Park and Fields have swung into fall hours. The hours of operation are: 4 to 9 p.m. Monday-Friday; noon to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Adult softball leagues

Aug. 10 is the deadline for Adult Softball League registration. The Park District offers men’s 12-inch and co-rec 14-inch divisions with weekly evening games at Techny Prairie Park and Fields. The season runs for six-to-eight weeks, followed by single-elimination playoffs. Games begin the week of Aug. 20. For more information, visit nbparks.org or call (847) 291-2980.

Free tennis clinic

Kick off the fall tennis season with a free clinic and evaluation from the Park District and Northbrook Racquet Club from 10 a.m. to noon on Aug. 11 at Wood Oaks Green. Ages 4 and older are welcome. Players at all levels can improve their strokes and find an appropriate class for their skills. Preregistration is required at nbparks.org or a Registration Office. In case of rain, the clinic will be at the Northbrook Racquet Club.

Wine & 9

Sportsman’s Country Club offers Couples’ Golf Aug. 11 with a Wine & 9 event. Couples can enjoy nine holes of golf, followed by appetizers and a wine tasting. The golf begins at 4 p.m.; the fee is $79 per couple. Call the Golf Shop at (847) 291-2351, ext. 1 to sign up.

Awesome August

Awesome August Camp invites children ages 5-12 to wrap up the summer with an extra week of activities, beginning on Aug. 13. Campers can enjoy a variety of exciting experiences, such as water parks, museums and entertainment centers. The camp day is 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with extended care available before and afterwards. Parent Night

Adventure Campus will hold a Parent Information Night at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 14 at the Leisure Center. The Park District partners with School Districts 27, 30 and 31 to offer organized activities before and after classes. Play with the pro

Adults can play the Classic 18 Course at Sportsman’s Country Club with a pro Aug. 15. Golfers pay applicable green fees (and cart fees), book a tee time for up to three players, and Sportsman’s will pair them with a pro. For details, call (847) 291-2351, ext. 3.

Hearing loss and treatment options

Adults can learn about the causes and diagnosis of hearing loss and treatment options from Dr. Stacey Logal, audiologist, at 1 p.m. on Aug. 16 at Congregation Beth Shalom. Refreshments will be served at the free program from the Northbrook Park District. Reserve a spot by calling (847) 291-2988.

Bingo and barbecue

On Aug. 17, adults can enjoy an afternoon of bingo, a BBQ lunch and a chance to win a fabulous prize at the Village Green Center. Sponsored by Manor Care, the program begins at 11 a.m. The fee is $10 for Northbrook Park District Senior Center members and $15 for nonmembers.

Summer skating recital

The Summer Skating Recital welcomes visitors to the Northbrook Sports Center from 5:15 to 8:45 p.m. Aug. 17. Figure skaters at all levels are invited to perform their competitive programs. Admission is free for spectators, and refreshments will be served.

Bicycle races

Friday Night bicycle races run through Aug. 17 at the Ed Rudolph Velodrome in Meadowhill Park. Riders of all ages and abilities are welcome to participate. The public is invited to watch top cyclists compete on Thursday nights. For more information, visit nbparks.org or call (847) 291-2980.

Soccer deadline

Aug. 19 is the early fee deadline for fall soccer with the Northbrook Park District. Practices begin the week of Sept. 3. Teams, formed by grade and school, will play seven games, weather permitting, beginning the weekend of Sept. 8. For more information, visit nbparks.org or call (847) 291-2995.

Greenbriar grand opening

Tthe Northbrook Park District and School District 28 will host a Grand Opening Celebration from 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 23 at the Greenbriar School. Families can enjoy games, contests, giveaways, refreshments and music in the new community gym, learn about fall sports programs for all ages, and see the school’s addition and renovations. The school is across from the Northbrook Library.

Adult/youth golf scramble

The Northbrook Park District will host an Adult/Youth Scramble at Anetsberger Golf Course on Aug. 25 with tee times beginning at 8:30 a.m. The event includes on-course contests, a short game challenge and lunch. Rounds of golf at Anetsberger and Sportsman’s East 9 Course are among the prizes. The fee is $39 per couple, which includes green fees and push carts. Call (847) 291-2971 by Aug. 22 to register.

Skating giveaway

A Great Skating Giveaway on Aug. 25 offers free ice skating instruction to children who have not taken classes before. The professional skating staff from the Northbrook Park District will teach basic skills and determine if children are ready for figure skating or hockey lessons. Free family skating event

Families can beat the heat — on the ice — at a Customer Appreciation Event from 12:30 to 2 p.m. on Aug. 25 at the Northbrook Sports Center. The Northbrook Park District will provide free admission, an exciting shoot-the-puck contest with prizes, on-ice games (broomball, noodle hockey and freeze dance) and free sport demonstrations by talented ice athletes from figure skating, speedskating and hockey. Auditions for children’s theater

Auditions for Legally Blonde are scheduled from 4 to 6 p.m. on Sept. 5 and 6 at the Northbrook Theatre, 3323 Walters Ave. in Northbrook. Auditions are open to residents and non-residents in grades 6-10 and include acting, dancing and singing tryouts. Rehearsals begin on Sept. 11, and performances of the musical are in December.
