Concert tickets

Tickets for a grand and memorable concert — “Home for the Holidays” — just became available at northbrooktheatre.org. The Northbrook Community Choir will join the Northbrook Symphony Orchestra to host the community concert from 4 to 6 p.m. on Dec. 2 in the majestic Divine Word Chapel of Techny Towers. Grants from the Illinois Arts Council and Northbrook Arts Commission provide partial funding for the event. For more information, call (847) 291-2367.

Summer skating recital

The Summer Skating Recital welcomes visitors to the Northbrook Sports Center from 5:15 to 8:45 p.m. Aug. 17. Figure skaters at all levels are invited to perform their competitive programs. Admission is free for spectators, and refreshments will be served.

Bicycle races

Friday Night bicycle wrap up the season on Aug. 17 at the Ed Rudolph Velodrome in Meadowhill Park. Riders of all ages and abilities are welcome to participate. The public is invited to watch top cyclists compete on Thursday nights. For more information, visit nbparks.org or call (847) 291-2980.

Soccer deadline

Aug. 19 is the early fee deadline for fall soccer with the Northbrook Park District. Practices begin the week of Sept. 3. Teams, formed by grade and school, will play seven games, weather permitting, beginning the weekend of Sept. 8. For more information, visit nbparks.org or call (847) 291-2995.

Park Board meeting

The Board of Park Commissioners will hold its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Aug. 22 in the Community Room of the Northbrook Sports Center, 1730 Pfingsten Road. The public is welcome to attend. Greenbriar grand opening

The Northbrook Park District and School District 28 will host a Grand Opening Celebration from 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 23 at the Greenbriar School. Families can enjoy games, contests, giveaways, refreshments and music in the new community gym, learn about fall sports programs for all ages, and see the school’s addition and renovations. The school is across from the Northbrook Library.

Adult/youth golf scramble

The Northbrook Park District will host an Adult/Youth Scramble at Anetsberger Golf Course on Aug. 25 with tee times beginning at 8:30 a.m. The event includes on-course contests, a short game challenge and lunch. Rounds of golf at Anetsberger and Sportsman’s East 9 Course are among the prizes. The fee is $39 per couple, which includes green fees and push carts. Call (847) 291-2971 by Aug. 22 to register.

Giveaway

A Great Skating Giveaway on Aug. 25 offers free ice skating instruction to children who have not taken classes before. The professional skating staff from the Northbrook Park District will teach basic skills and determine if children are ready for figure skating or hockey lessons. The classes begin at 11 a.m. and 11:45 a.m., and registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Sign up at nbparks.org or call (847) 291-2993.

Free family skating event

Families can beat the heat — on the ice — at a Customer Appreciation Event from 12:30 to 2 p.m. on Aug. 25 at the Northbrook Sports Center. The Northbrook Park District will provide free admission and loaner skates, an exciting shoot-the-puck contest, on-ice games (ice limbo, noodle hockey and freeze dance) and demonstrations by talented figure skaters. Trip — Chicago Cubs vs. Milwaukee Brewers

Holy cow! The Senior Center will take a group to Miller Park on Aug. 22 to cheer for the Cubs from Loge Box seats in a climate-controlled setting. A coach bus will deliver the group to the door. Adults can pack lunch or buy food at the park. Tickets are limited; the fee is $89 for Northbrook Park District Senior Center members and $99 for non-members. The Wonders of Israel

Join world traveler Bill Helmuth for a virtual visit to Tel Aviv, Haifa and the Dead Sea of Masada beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Aug. 24 at Congregation Beth Shalom. Refreshments will be served. Flag Football
Preseason Clinic/Combine

Students in grades 3-8 can work on skills at a Flag Football Clinic and Combine from 1 to 3 p.m. on Aug. 25 at Techny Prairie Park and Fields. The combine includes a shuttle drill, 40-yard dash and cone drill. Players receive a T-shirt and results from the combine testing; the fee is $15. Sunshine Preschool Parent Night

Sunshine Preschool will hold a Parent Information Night for enrolled families at 7 p.m. on Aug. 27 at the Leisure Center. The preschool meets two, three or four days per week and is accepting enrollment for the 2012-2013 school year. For more information, visit nbparks.org or call (847) 291-2995.

Bingo and dessert

Enjoy gourmet desserts, tour Whitehall of Deerfield, and play bingo for a chance to win prizes beginning at 1 p.m. on Aug. 27. Call (847) 291-2988 to register, and meet the group at Whitehall, 300 Waukegan Road. The fee is $3.

Mix and Mingle
Social Event —
Ravinia Dinner and Dance Concert

A Mix & Mingle Event on Aug. 28 allows seniors on the North Shore to enjoy dinner and an amazing performance by Momix Dance Company at Ravinia Festival in Highland Park. The dancer/illusionists are known internationally for their inventiveness and acrobatic artistry. The dinner buffet begins at 6 p.m. at Ravinia’s Mirabelle, and the dance concert begins at 8 p.m. The fee is $40 for Northbrook Park District Senior Center members and $50 for nonmembers. Auditions for
Northbrook Theatre Children’s Company

Auditions for Legally Blonde are scheduled from 4 to 6 p.m. Sept. 5 and 6 at the Northbrook Theatre, 3323 Walters Ave. in Northbrook. Auditions are open to residents and non-residents in grades 6-10 and include acting, dancing and singing tryouts. Rehearsals begin on Sept. 11, and performances of the musical are in December. School’s Out Fun Trips

On Sept. 17, when schools are closed for Rosh Hashanah, children can enjoy bouncing and bowling on a Northbrook Park District trip to Pump It Up in Glenview and Brunswick Zone in Niles. On Sept. 26, another Park District trip heads to Enchanted Castle in Lombard. The trips are open to children ages 5-12, who will meet at the Leisure Center at 9 a.m. and return by 3 p.m. Extended care is available before and after the trips.
