GLENVIEW — For years, Nina Solomos managed her husband, Paul’s downtown beauty salons part time. But 11 years ago, the mother of four decided she was ready to open up her own salon, so she set up shop right here in Glenview, the town where the Salomos family has lived for 27 years.

“My kids were getting older, and I wanted to do something for myself,” said Solomos, who owns and co-manages Scruples Salon & Spa with her son, John, “This made so much sense to me.”

Located a few doors down from Dominick’s in the Glen, Scruples is a full-service salon for men and women that offers haircuts, blow drys, color, conditioning treatments, hair extensions, Brazilian blow outs, Keratin treatments and up-dos for special occasions. The salon also provides spa services, including manicures, pedicures, waxing, threading, eyebrow shaping, facials and massages.

“I come here twice a week for a blow dry, and I get haircuts and color here,” said Kay Hamood of Highland Park, “It’s worth the trip from Highland Park. My hair has a lot of shine and the style lasts.”

“They just know how I like my hair,” said Carol Klemke of Glenview, a 10-year client, “They’ve got it down perfectly.”

When asked about the latest beauty trends, Solomos said three things come to mind: Brazilian blow outs and Keratin treatments, both for people with frizzy hair who want to calm their hair down and cut their styling time in half, and eyebrow threading, which is an alternative to waxing or tweezing eyebrows.

“Threading is getting really big,” she said, “It’s better than waxing because it lasts longer, it doesn’t pull on your eyelid, and the esthetician can control it easier, so you get a better brow shape.”

Scruples also offers something that’s rare for a beauty salon: they are open on Mondays. Solomos said her decision to do this came from so many customers who wanted Monday appointments.

“Nobody is open on Mondays in the area, so I saw an opportunity,” she said, “We are so busy on Mondays. We come in early, we stay late, we do what our customers need.”

Dangelo Budakh has been a stylist at Scruples for eight years, and said he considers himself an artist.

“I look at the client and I listen to what they want,” said Budakh, “And then I perform. And I love it. I truly love my job.”

“I’ve been coming here for 8 years, and I love my stylist,” said Ann Pichette of Budakh, “He knows my hair and I wouldn’t trust anyone else.”

Haircuts at Scruples range from $35-$50 for women and $15-$25 for men. Blow drys are $20-$45.

“I love being in a service business,” said Solomos, “When you take care of someone and you make them look and feel good, it makes you feel good. It’s like I’ve accomplished something great.”
