Kids’ Duathlon
Get ready to race! The second annual Kids’ Duathlon invites ages 5-14 to a friendly competition on Friday at Meadowhill Park and the Ed Rudolph Velodrome. Boys and girls compete separately in running and bicycling contests and receive free pizza, drinks, and admission to the pool afterwards. Check-in begins at 6 p.m., and the racing is from 7 to 8 p.m. Contestants are grouped by age. Sign up at nbparks.org or any Registration Office. Children can attend free training sessions at the Velodrome at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday nights before the event.
Northbrook’s
Talent Showdown
Calling all talented acts in Northbrook! Singers, dancers, comedians, jugglers, actors, musicians, acrobats, magicians… all are welcome. Aug. 19 is the deadline to enter a new talent showdown from the Northbrook Park District. Individuals or groups can audition by submitting an entry form (available at the Leisure Center, Northbrook Sports Center or Village Green Center), a DVD and a $5 entry fee. Semifinalists will compete on Sept. 9 at the Northbrook Theater, and the finals are on Oct. 1 at Northbrook Autumnfest. Audition categories are: Music, Singing, Dance, Comedy and Unique Talent. Evening Pool Fun
A Super Soak Sunday welcomes families to the Northbrook Sports Center Pool from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Sunday for wet fun and games. And, Meadowhill Aquatic Center hosts a Wacky Wednesday from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday. The pools are open until 9 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays. Youth Open
Hockey
Youth Open Hockey is available at the Northbrook Sports Center. Ages 12 and under can play on Monday and Thursday evenings through July. (Kids under 10 need an adult present.) Teens can play on Saturdays from 12:10 to 1:35 p.m. through Aug. 20. Players require full equipment. Northbrook Park District staff will help form teams and ensure equal playing time. New Corporate Decathlon
A corporate decathlon invites area teams to Meadowhill Park from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. The new event from the Park District features 10 events, including swimming, running, cheerleading and beanbag tossing. For more information, call (847) 291-2980.
National Night Out
The annual National Night Out program welcomes families to the Meadowhill Aquatic Center from 6 to 9 p.m. Aug. 2 for serious fun. The Northbrook Park District and Northbrook Police Department host the crime/drug prevention event to strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community relationships. The free event includes use of the pool, DJ entertainment, free hot dogs and drinks, games and raffles, and crime prevention tips. Jeffrey’s Climbing Tower in Meadowhill Park will be open for demonstrations.
Wii Tournament
A Wii Bowling Tournament on Aug. 9 invites all levels of virtual bowlers to the Leisure Center at 1:30 p.m. The free event is a single elimination tournament with a prize for the winner. Register in advance at the Senior Center or call (847) 291-2988.
Free Tennis Clinic
A free tennis clinic on Aug. 13 welcomes ages 4 and older and all levels of players from 10 a.m. to noon at Wood Oaks Green. Beginners can try a new sport, and players can improve their strokes and find their appropriate level before autumn classes begin. Register in advance at nbparks.org or call (847) 291-2995.
Open Climbing Tower
Jeffrey’s Climbing Tower is open for an exciting adventure from 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 13 at Meadowhill Park. Usually limited to groups, the 30-foot tower is available for individuals, age 10 years or older. Climbers can experience strength, power, goal setting and accomplishment. Free Zumba
in the Park
Adults can try a free Zumba class at 9 a.m. Aug. 17 at Techny Prairie Park and Fields in the Bluegill Shelter. The dance fitness class offers a fun, non-intimidating workout in a party-like atmosphere. For more information, call (847) 291-2995.
Line Dance
Workshop
A Line Dance Workshop on Aug. 11 welcomes adults to the Leisure Center from 1 to 2:15 p.m. Adults can learn the electric slide, boot scoot boogie and other line dances. Partners are not needed. The fee is $19 for Senior Center members and $25 for non-members.
Bicycle Races
Bicycle races get rolling at 7 p.m. on Friday nights at the Ed Rudolph Velodrome in Meadowhill Park. Riders of all ages and abilities are invited to participate. On Thursday nights, the public can watch top cyclists compete, beginning at 7 p.m. The spectator fee is $2; children under 12 are free. For more information, visit nbparks.org or call (847) 291-2980.
Fall Scenery Trip
A five-day trip to West Virginia in October offers stunning views of fall foliage, a scenic train ride, the charm of Charleston and a visit to the underground bunker built as a Cold War shelter for Congress. The Senior Center also is accepting registration for three August trips: Horseshoe Casino, “The Student Prince” at Light Opera Works, and a Chicago pizza tour. Board Meeting July 27
The Park Board of Commissioners will hold a monthly meeting at 7 p.m. on Wednesday in the Little Theatre of the Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Ave. The public is welcome to attend.
