Glenview, Northbrook OK plans for railroad bridge
GLENVIEW – After meeting Tuesday, Aug. 28, Glenview and Northbrook Village Boards of Trustees agreed to Union Pacific Railroad's bridge plans for Shermer Road.
Union Pacific Railroad and the Illinois Department of Transportation will spend an estimated $10 million to build a permanent bridge over Shermer Road. This will replace the viaduct that collapsed on July 4.
Union Pacific will be responsible for, fund and build the bridge, which will be roughly 149-feet with a 57-foot clear span to provide for three 12-foot lanes, a 10-foot-wide bike path and a 7-foot-wide bike path. Union Pacific will also fund the construction of a temporary connection to Patriot Boulevard via Old Willow Road to help facilitate traffic, as well as a temporary traffic control signal at West Lake Avenue and Shermer Road.
The villages of Glenview and Northbrook, and IDOT will be responsible only for funding and building the roadway improvements in the future.
The final document will be reviewed by Glenview and Northbrook Village Attorneys before plans move forth. The temporary connection between Patriot Boulevard on Old Willow Road is estimated to take between six and eight weeks to complete. The construction of the bridge is scheduled to take 18 to 24 months.
