District 27 Notes for June 1

Board of Education meeting

The Board of Education will meet at 6:30 p.m. June 21 in a board working session in the Wood Oaks Library, 1250 Sanders Road, Northbrook. The regular meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Wood Oaks Commons.

Sievert receives award for poem

Congratulations to Katia Sievert, a seventh-grader at Wood Oaks, who received second place in a national contest for her poem, “The American Sculpture.”

The poem was submitted by two Wood Oaks teachers to the Illinois North Shore Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She received first place from the DAR’s Junior American Citizen’s Committee’s Creative Expression Contest at the local level, then first place at the state level, and first place in the North Central Division. The poem was later entered in the national contest.

Last day of school

June 7 is the last day of school for students in District 27. Students at Shabonee and Hickory Point will be in school from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., while sixth and seventh graders at Wood Oaks are in attendance from 9 to 10 a.m.

New PTA executive board

The new executive board for the Wood Oaks PTA for 2012-2013 has been announced.

The officers are as follows: Co-presidents — Melanie Berkowitz and Laurie Shapiro; vice president — Audrey Le Cavalier; treasurer — Cecilia Suarez; and secretary — Kathy Burow.

Summer Reading Program

District 27’s Summer Reading Program will begin June 13.

The “Dive into Reading” program will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. on Wednesdays, from June 13 to July 25 in the Hickory Point School library.

Students and parents are invited to attend and talk about books, do crafts, check out books and win prizes.
