There is no school on March 4, due to a Teacher Institute Day.

District 30’s ISAT Testing is March 5-15

District 30 third through eighth graders will take the Illinois Standards Achievement Test (ISAT), the state-required achievement test, between March 5 and 15. Students in grades three through eight will be tested in reading and mathematics. Students in grades four and grade seven will also be tested in science. Students’ individual performance results of the ISAT assessment will be reported to parents in the fall. District and school building results will also be available on the Illinois report card, usually in October. District 30’s School Calendar set for 2013-2014

District 30’s school calendar is set for the 2013-2014 school year. The first day of school will be Aug. 22. Teacher Institute Days will be held Aug. 19-21. There is no school on Sept. 2, in recognition of Labor Day. There will be no school on Sept. 5, due to a District Holiday. Thanksgiving recess takes place from Nov. 27-29. School resumes on Dec. 2. The first day of Winter Recess will be Dec. 23, and school will resume on Jan. 6, 2014. The first day of Spring Recess will be March 24, and school will resume on April 1. There is no school on May 26, due to the Memorial Day holiday. The last day of school, between June 5-12, will be determined by inclement weather and/or other emergency conditions.

Sign up for the Lew Blond Memorial 5K Run/Walk!

The 13th Annual Lew Blond Memorial 5K Run/Walk, 1 Mile Run takes place at 8 a.m., June 1 at Northbrook/Glenview School District 30’s Maple School, 2370 Shermer Road, Northbrook. The 1 Mile Run will be held earlier this year, at 8:45 a.m. On May 31, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m., the PTO will host a pasta dinner titled “Get Ready with Spaghetti.” At that time, participants and families can enjoy dinner, pick-up race packets and Dri-Fit T-shirts, and attend a Lew Blond Run vendor expo at Maple School.

Sponsorship opportunities are available for the 2013 race. Become a part of the action by supporting this community tradition and by lending a hand in the fight against ALS. Wescott Third Graders celebrate the American Folk Song

On Feb. 8, Wescott School third graders sang famous folk songs from the past as part of their grade level show titled, “Just Plain Folks.” The children provided background information about westward expansion and sang songs such as “The Erie Canal”, “Down the River”, “Billy Boy”, “Camptown Races”, “Buffalo Gals”, and “Casey Jones.” The show also included two original songs written by music teacher Bill Vaananen, called “A Day in the West” and “Just Plain Folks.”

Bill Vaananen wrote and directed the show. The following staff members assisted with the production: third grade teachers Karen McCluskey, Kim Thompson, Connie Park, Amey Kvelland, art teacher Tia Stevens, building assistant Joan Marsh, and physical education teacher Roy Grober.

Support the Maple PTO — “Dine Out at Roti Mediterranean Grill” on Feb. 28

Maple School’s PTO is hosting the “Dine Out at Roti Mediterranean Grill” fundraiser from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Feb. 28 at Willow Festival Shopping Center, 984 Willow Road, Northbrook. Residents are encouraged to visit the restaurant for lunch, an after school snack, or dinner. Present a flyer, which can be accessed in the weekly Maple Marquee, and 20 percent of all sales will be donated to Maple School. Visit Wescott’s Fun Fair on March 9

Where can families spend a fun-filled, action-packed Saturday afternoon? The place to go is Wescott School PTO’s annual Fun Fair, which takes place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., March 9, at 1820 Western Ave., Northbrook. This year’s theme is “Character Connects Us.” There will be games, food, a bake sale, cake walk, raffles and a silent auction.

Maple Mustang Awards announced

Maple School Mustang Award winners were recognized on Feb. 8. Maple School’s Mustang Awards are presented to students at all grade levels each semester, as part of the recognition of students’ positive contributions to the learning community. The criteria used for determining recipients of the award are the six pillars of the CHARACTER COUNTS! coalition: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship.

Mustang Award winners include eighth graders Rishabh Arora, Conner Purcell, Meghan Cruz, Chritsine Han, Joey Sperber, Emily Stoller, Liam Garrity, and Michelle Michalczewski; seventh graders Noah Baer, Anton Ivanchenko, Ari Nadler, Kosta Hallkias, Shalini Ramachandra, Jackie Glickman, Erica Tashma, and Fiona Hellerman; and sixth graders Sydney Kostoglanis, Rhea Shah, Dana Steffen, Megan D’Souza, Finn Garrity, Sammy Vayngart, Zachary Bilimoria, and Thomas Cavallaro.

March 1 is School Spirit Day

Wescott and Willowbrook School will have a School Spirit Day on March 1. Everyone is encouraged to wear school colors or spirit wear on that day.

District 30’s Summer Schedule available on March 5

Northbrook/Glenview School District 30‘s Summer School Program will be held at Maple School, 2370 Shermer Road, Northbrook, from June 10 through July 12. There will be no classes on July 4, in recognition of Independence Day.

All classes meet at Maple School.

A card will be mailed to all residents in early March with Summer School Program information. Check out the Summer School website at www.district30.org/about/Summer-School.cfm for more information, and to see the class schedule, which will be available on March 5.
