Carmel alumnus Kevin Hendricks, a senior outfielder for the Benedictine men’s baseball team, was recently named to the Capital One Academic All-America Division III Second Team. The Mundelein native is a management and organizational behavior major. Early in the season, Hendricks was named to the Academic All-District team. After missing all of last season because of injury, Hendricks bounced back to hit .356 with .428 on-base percentage. He scored 37 runs and knocked in 38. He also tied for the team lead in stolen bases with 18 and started all 44 of his team’s games. Corey Burns staked her claim as one of the country’s best center backs this year. The Loyola girls soccer team’s defense, with Burns as its anchor, conceded just 10 goals all season. She also helped the young Ramblers win a Class 3A New Trier Sectional title. For her efforts, Burns was a National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-American selection. The Illinois High School Soccer Coaches Association named Burns to its all-state squad for the second consecutive season and she’s also the Pioneer Press All-Area Girls Soccer Player of the Year. Of the nearly two dozen players on the roster for this weekend’s baseball showcase at St. Charles North, few are like Hinsdale Central senior Jacob White. White is not playing travel baseball this summer and has not seriously considered baseball in college. That’s not the case for the rest of his West Suburban Conference teammates at the 16th annual Northwest Suburban Baseball Tournament. They are hoping to attract plenty of interest from college recruiters or major-league scouts Friday and Saturday. White is the only baseball player from Hinsdale Central to get an invitation, but football is his primary sport. After 15 years, the Stevenson Showcase has moved. The brainchild of high school baseball promoter and former Hersey coach Harvey Foster has found a new home. His two-day showcase is officially known as the Northwest Suburban Baseball Tournament, the premier exhibition for Chicago-area high school baseball talent each June. The previous site of the event, Stevenson became so associated as the host that players, college recruiters and major-league scouts simply called it the Stevenson Showcase. But after last year’s event, Stevenson officials were no longer interested in providing the site. Those who consider the Catholic League the state’s premier football conference now have an even better argument. The 100-year-old conference isn’t standing pat in its second century, confirming on Monday the addition for football of five current Suburban Christian Conference members — including defending state champs Montini (Class 5A) and Aurora Christian (3A). Those schools were left looking for a new home after seven other SCC teams left to join the Metro Suburban Conference earlier this spring. The new Catholic League football alignment, which takes effect for the 2014 season, will have four divisions, up from the current three. New Trier alumna Chelsea Delaney led her Kenyon College women’s softball team to the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament this season for the first time since 2006. The Kenyon Ladies finished the season with a 22-15 record and a 10-9 mark in conference play. Delaney, a Kenilworth native and sophomore third baseman, led her team with eight home runs, double the total of her next closest teammate. She also finished second on the team in batting average (.361), on-base percentage (.445) and slugging percentage (.630). Delaney drew a team-leading 17 walks and only struck out nine times all season. Goals and assists are two of the tangible measurements of success in lacrosse. But without the ability to win a high percentage of faceoffs, scoring is limited. Glenbrook North was one of the higher scoring boys teams in the state this season thanks in no small part to its elite faceoff specialist, Logan Weintraub. The senior midfielder won over 60 percent of faceoffs during the season. That was nothing, though, compared to his recent postseason play. “Logan came through with a tremendous performance in the playoffs,” Glenbrook North coach Justin Georgacakis said. “In our three biggest games, he averaged 80 … ]]> Fri, 07 Jun 2013 21:46:00 -0500 http://northbrook.suntimes.com/sports/20536057-419/weintraub-dominates-faceoffs.html http://northbrook.suntimes.com/sports/20536057-419/weintraub-dominates-faceoffs.html <![CDATA[ Schatz, Schiappa close careers with rivalry win for state championship ]]>

NORTHFIELD — Loyola seniors Charlie Schatz and Mike Schiappa experienced the highs and lows of high school lacrosse. As sophomores, Schatz and Schiappa both were on varsity when the Ramblers lost to New Trier 9-2 in the state final at Oak Park-River Forest. It was Loyola’s seventh consecutive loss in the title game. “Horrible,” Schatz said of the feeling of losing to the Trevians. “It was very painful.” Last season, Loyola captured its first state championship since 2004 by beating Lake Forest 6-4. GLENVIEW — This year’s Loyola girls lacrosse team left no doubt which team was the best in the state. Like the four teams before them, these Ramblers ended the season with a state championship, defeating Montini 16-5 at Glenbrook South on Friday. It was the fourth spring in a row Loyola was perfect against in-state opponents. While the rest of the state tries to catch up, Loyola (22-3) continues to stay a step ahead. That likely will be the case next season, too. The Ramblers will lose several talented players. GLENVIEW — The Loyola girls soccer season ended with a loss to Buffalo Grove in the Class 3A supersectionals, but within the team there is optimism about where the program could be headed next year. The Ramblers went 23-2-1 in the regular season, defeating New Trier 1-0 in the sectional final, but came up short against the Bison in a 2-0 loss May 28. With six freshmen seeing starting time and 14 of its 27 players underclassmen, Loyola could consider its success a pleasant surprise, with this year’s team improving upon a sectionals loss to the Trevians in 2012. “Name … ]]> Fri, 07 Jun 2013 20:56:47 -0500 http://northbrook.suntimes.com/sports/20519537-419/after-solid-year-young-loyola-team-could-be-scary-in-2014.html http://northbrook.suntimes.com/sports/20519537-419/after-solid-year-young-loyola-team-could-be-scary-in-2014.html <![CDATA[ Wieczorek, Mazurek provide optimism ]]>

SKOKIE — Although the year ended on a sour note for the Loyola boys volleyball team, the Ramblers have many reasons to feel confident about next season. The team will be both young and experienced next year: The Ramblers expect to return five players who had a significant impact on the squad that fell to Glenbrook South in the Niles West Sectional final on May 28. “We have such a good foundation,” Loyola coach Lionel Ebeling said on May 28 after listing all of the underclassmen contributors on the Ramblers. “We really wanted this one tonight but if you can … ]]> Fri, 07 Jun 2013 20:57:50 -0500 http://northbrook.suntimes.com/sports/20535946-419/wieczorek-mazurek-provide-optimism.html http://northbrook.suntimes.com/sports/20535946-419/wieczorek-mazurek-provide-optimism.html <![CDATA[ O’Malley, Lambert earn MVP honors at IHSLA All-Star Game ]]>

ORLAND PARK — The best of the best seniors met Thursday night at Sandburg to compete in the 2013 IHSLA All-Star Game.
