WRESTLING: Barrington qualified six wrestlers to next weekend’s State Meet while Mundelein’s Matt Ornoff (138) and Deerfield’s Lenny Bloom (145) and Artie Bess (220) all earned sectional championships in their respective weight classes.

BOYS BASKETBALL: Glenbrook North (17-5, 7-2 in CSL play) won 61-42 over visiting Maine West (12-12, 5-4) on Friday, clinching at least a share of this year’s conference crown with guard Kurt Karis using his quickness to get to the basket and his outside touch to lead the Spartans with 21 points.

GIRLS GYMNASTICS: In preparing freshman gymnast Carli Betman for her first sectional this week, Glenbrook North head coach Julie Holmbeck has adopted a slogan more appropriate for a boxing match. Betman, the Spartans’ lone qualifier, punched her ticket to tonight’s (Thursday’s) Niles North Sectional with her performance at the Jan. 31 Lake Forest Regional.

BOYS BASKETBALL: Andrew McAuliffe is still getting used to playing again after sitting out for two months, and Glenbrook North is still adjusting to having him back on the court. The junior, though, showed he might be getting back into the groove as he helped the Spartans pull away for a 55-43 win at Hersey on Tuesday night.

GIRLS BASKETBALL: If stifling defense is going to be a component for a deep IHSA playoff run for Trinity, it was definitely on display Saturday night against Loyola in the GCAC Red division conference championship. In a rematch of last year’s final, the Blazers limited Loyola to single digits in all four quarters and cruised to a 49-18 title victory in River Forest.
