Chicago Bears camps coming to local communities

Former Chicago Bears Desmond Clark, Allan Ellis, Kris Haines, Al Harris, Jim Morrissey and Mickey Pruitt will help host a youth football camp at Barbara Rose Middle School in Barrington July 15-19. The camp, which is designed to provide non-contact instruction to kids between 6-14 years old, will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. every day. Players will be taught how to run, throw, catch, defend and compete through safe, non-contact instruction. Registration can be done at BearsCamps.com or by calling (312) 226-7776. Hendricks earns academic All-America honor

Carmel alumnus Kevin Hendricks, a senior outfielder for the Benedictine men’s baseball team, was recently named to the Capital One Academic All-America Division III Second Team. The Mundelein native is a management and organizational behavior major. Early in the season, Hendricks was named to the Academic All-District team. After missing all of last season because of injury, Hendricks bounced back to hit .356 with .428 on-base percentage. He scored 37 runs and knocked in 38. Corey Burns staked her claim as one of the country’s best center backs this year. The Loyola girls soccer team’s defense, with Burns as its anchor, conceded just 10 goals all season. She also helped the young Ramblers win a Class 3A New Trier Sectional title. For her efforts, Burns was a National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-American selection. The Illinois High School Soccer Coaches Association named Burns to its all-state squad for the second consecutive season and she’s also the Pioneer Press All-Area Girls Soccer Player of the Year. Of the nearly two dozen players on the roster for this weekend’s baseball showcase at St. Charles North, few are like Hinsdale Central senior Jacob White. White is not playing travel baseball this summer and has not seriously considered baseball in college. That’s not the case for the rest of his West Suburban Conference teammates at the 16th annual Northwest Suburban Baseball Tournament. After 15 years, the Stevenson Showcase has moved. The brainchild of high school baseball promoter and former Hersey coach Harvey Foster has found a new home. His two-day showcase is officially known as the Northwest Suburban Baseball Tournament, the premier exhibition for Chicago-area high school baseball talent each June. The previous site of the event, Stevenson became so associated as the host that players, college recruiters and major-league scouts simply called it the Stevenson Showcase. Catholic League welcomes former SCC teams

Those who consider the Catholic League the state’s premier football conference now have an even better argument. The 100-year-old conference isn’t standing pat in its second century, confirming on Monday the addition for football of five current Suburban Christian Conference members — including defending state champs Montini (Class 5A) and Aurora Christian (3A). Those schools were left looking for a new home after seven other SCC teams left to join the Metro Suburban Conference earlier this spring. New Trier alumna Chelsea Delaney led her Kenyon College women’s softball team to the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament this season for the first time since 2006. The Kenyon Ladies finished the season with a 22-15 record and a 10-9 mark in conference play. Delaney, a Kenilworth native and sophomore third baseman, led her team with eight home runs, double the total of her next closest teammate. She also finished second on the team in batting average (.361), on-base percentage (.445) and slugging percentage (.630). Goals and assists are two of the tangible measurements of success in lacrosse. But without the ability to win a high percentage of faceoffs, scoring is limited. Glenbrook North was one of the higher scoring boys teams in the state this season thanks in no small part to its elite faceoff specialist, Logan Weintraub. The senior midfielder won over 60 percent of faceoffs during the season. NORTHFIELD — Loyola seniors Charlie Schatz and Mike Schiappa experienced the highs and lows of high school lacrosse. As sophomores, Schatz and Schiappa both were on varsity when the Ramblers lost to New Trier 9-2 in the state final at Oak Park-River Forest. Like the four teams before them, these Ramblers ended the season with a state championship, defeating Montini 16-5 at Glenbrook South on Friday.
