You might think the Glenbrook North girls basketball program should rent a limousine and travel through town celebrating their new-found winning ways.

This program just hasn’t had much recent success in girls hoops and now they are sitting on 16 wins. How about that?

There of course are reasons why this team is winning. Adding Gracie Sanchez to the lineup has helped. Rachel Blitt is enjoying a strong senior season and was named MVP of the St. Viator Snowflake Tournament.

The Spartans (16-6) found another valuable weapon Friday to add to their arsenal. That’s the three-point shooting of Sammie Von Rueden. This junior led Glenbrook North with 15 points and stood out in the fourth quarter when she fired in back-to-back three-pointers.

“She came off the bench,” Spartans coach Renee Brosnan said. “She’s a great shooter. She can hit shots. She does a good job.”

Niles North broke open a close game in the second half and posted a 57-42 win.

“We need to step it up,” said Brosnan. “Let’s beat some really good teams. Let’s win a regional.”

Brosnan wasn’t pleased to see her club mishandle the basketball.

“We would turn the ball over and they would score,” she said. “That turned a one-point game into a nine-point game.”

The Spartans’ 16th win came over Regina Dominican 57-52 on Saturday.

Glenbrook North gets a chance to catch its breath before resuming its chase in the Central Suburban North. After Wednesday’s scheduled game at Wauconda, the Spartans take on Grant on Feb. 1, then return for Senior Night Feb. 3 against Highland Park.

Sectional seedings will be set today (Thursday).
