One match at the state tournament showed off Will Sauser’s heart.
In his third match of the day in the second round of the back draw, the Glenbrook North freshman beat Providence Catholic’s James Zeeman in a third-set tiebreaker.
“That was really impressive,” Spartans coach Jeff Jordan said.
Sauser then followed up with a straight-set victory to close out his four-match day.
“Will’s tournament experience outside of high school paid off for him,” Jordan said. “It’s brutal, but he’s been in those situations before, playing multiple matches in one day.”
Sauser exited his first state tournament in the fourth round of the consolation bracket. He finished 3-2, including a second-round loss to Hinsdale Central’s Sam Bloom, who came in fifth.
“That’s a loss you can’t hold against him,” Jordan said. “That kid went on to earn all-state.”
Sauser will be one of four Spartans back from their sectional lineup. Brian Ehrenberg, who played singles, and freshmen doubles partners David Zakhodin and Miguel Perez also are expected to return.
“It should be an exciting season next year,” Jordan said.
