T.J. Tedeschi will be taking on a bigger workload in 2013.

The soon-to-be Glenbrook North senior is just beginning the arduous task of finding a college, while enduring the offseason grind of a two-sport athlete.

The all-conference third baseman hit fifth this

past season behind Chad Bruce and Jason Scholl, but likely will be more of a focal point of the Spartans’ offense next season.

“It’s just a matter of continuing to play because the more he plays, the better he gets, both defensively and offensively,” said head coach Dom Savino. “He’ll definitely be one of our leaders as a senior and we expect big things out of him because of the type of kid he is. He’s a great competitor, he’s an awesome worker and he’s going to excel on the baseball field, both in high school and at the collegiate level.”

With the Nos. 3 and 4 hitters out of the lineup, Tedeschi feels more obligated to improve on the one part of his offense that he’s been lacking.

“Maybe I need to work on hitting for power,” said Tedeschi. “I didn’t hit a home run this year and hopefully I can get a couple of those next year. I hit a lot of singles and a couple doubles and I think I can work more to my forehand for fielding. I made some backhand plays, but I don’t have as much range to my forehand and I want to work on that.”

Last weekend’s Stevenson Showcase, in Lincolnshire, gave colleges from around the area the opportunity to see Tedeschi’s skills. Savino believes whichever school gets him will be acquiring a tenacious baseball player.

“You get a kid that’s extremely tough from a mental standpoint,” Savino said. “I think that’s what separates him from a lot of other players with similar ability levels. There’s also all the other qualities that I get to see on a daily basis that may not necessarily show up in a showcase, but the more that someone sees him play, the more they’re going to like him.”

He’s still waiting for offer, but as the process of finding a school begins, he is very excited. Tedeschi, who plays quarterback and linebacker, will also be finishing his high school football career in the fall and his choice of school will include one more factor.

“I’ve been contacted by a couple football schools, but nothing major,” Tedeschi said. “I’ll see how that

goes, but I just have to keep playing football throughout the summer with baseball and hopefully I’ll have a great senior year.”

At the baseball tournament at Stevenson, the CSL lost 9-5 to the West Suburban Conference on Friday and defeated the MSL 5-1 on Saturday.

In the first game, Tedeschi reached on an error in his only trip to the plate. The Spartans third baseman was able to showcase his fielding in Saturday’s win, but batted 0-for-2 with a walk.

“I made some mistakes, but that’s baseball,” said Tedeschi. “I thought I did pretty well fielding; I made some plays today. I couldn’t come through with a hit, but I think I performed really well.”

Pitchers Brad Margolin and Jake Derousse also participated for the Spartans.

“I thought they did a very good job in helping themselves moving forward, in terms of college,” said Savino. “We’re all very pleased with the way that they played.”
