NORTHBROOK — Grant Rushing ran for a 68-yard touchdown on the game’s third play Friday, and the senior running back never slowed down in Glenbrook North’s 48-24 win over Lane.

“After that (touchdown run), I knew it would be a good game,” Rushing said.

Rushing broke loose for a career-high 295 yards on 16 carries and scored five times, including on a 39-yard pass from A.J. Spitz.

“Last week, Grant struggled in part because the offensive line didn’t step it up,” said senior Paul Boidanis, a two-way lineman. “(Friday), we were coming off the ball great, and it showed in Grant’s performance.”

Rushing scored on Glenbrook North’s first four possessions, and Spitz added a 3-yard TD pass to Dylan Marx for a 35-3 lead at the half. Rushing, who also played safety and returned punts, went into the locker room with 232 yards and four TDs.

The Spartans (1-1) started up again in the third quarter when Spitz hooked up with Rushing for a 42-3 lead. On Lane’s next possession, Boidanis scooped up a fumble and rumbled 56 yards for a touchdown — the first of his playing career. That triggered the running clock with 5:11 to play in the third.

“I’ve played offensive and defensive line my whole life,” Boidanis said. “I worked as a tight end over the summer, but I am back on the line. But I was determined to get a touchdown this season.”

The Indians (0-2) made it respectable with three touchdowns down the stretch.
