Glenbrook North edges Evanston in sloppy game

NORTHBROOK — Grant Rushing didn’t rack up yards running the ball and he didn’t even score Friday.
But the Glenbrook North footbal team beat Evanston thanks to the senior’s contributions.
Rushing’s two punts in the fourth quarter reversed the field enough to enable the Spartans to hold off the Wildkits for a 14-10 win.
“Sometimes, it’s the little things like that,” Glenbrook North senior lineman Paul Boidanis said.
After Glenbrook North stopped Evanston on fourth-and-goal from the 2, the Spartans went three-and-out. But Rushing’s 51-yard punt sufficiently switched the field with 5:46 to play.
Later, when A.J. Spitz suffered a 19-yard sack back to his own 11, Rushing again booted a big one. This time, Josh Simone recovered the ball after it touched an Evanston player.
Glenbrook North (3-1) then was able to run out the clock for its third consecutive win. Evanston (3-1) lost for the first time this season.
“I think the first game everybody was playing scared and on their heels,” Boidanis said of the team’s 49-13 loss to Hersey. “Now, we are playing downhill and going after teams. We’re not worried about who we are playing.”
Rushing ran 14 times for 30 yards. He lost a fumble and threw an interception. Spitz carried the ball 25 times for 71 yards and scored the game-winning touchdown with 7:14 to go in the third quarter. But the junior quarterback also turned over the ball twice.
The two teams combined for nine turnovers, including four fumbles and three interceptions. All 24 points came after turnovers.
Evanston took a 10-7 lead into the half on Chris Little’s 39-yard pass to Alex Vergara.
But the Wildkits couldn’t stop making mistakes. Little threw an interception — caught by Rushing — on Evanston’s first play of the third quarter. The Wildkits fumbled away their next possession before failing to score points on their third series after setting up first-and-goal from the 7.
“We played with a lot of heart in the second half,” Boidanis said.
The Spartans start CSL North play next week at home against Deerfield. Evanston opens up its CSL South schedule next week on the road against Glenbrook South.
