WILMETTE — Loyola junior point guard James Clarke once again proved he can play on the big stage.

Clarke scored 10 points, and his steal and layup in the final seconds of the third quarter got the Ramblers some separation from St. Ignatius. The Loyola boys basketball team went on to win 38-22 Friday, moving into a tie for first with the Wolfpack in the Catholic North. Ramblers junior guard Jack Morrissey scored six of his game-best 11 in the fourth, all on layups.

Less than a minute into the fourth, Loyola sophomore forward Griffin Boehm converted a 3-point play after an offensive rebound to give the Ramblers their biggest lead to that point, a 30-21 advantage. Loyola held the Wolfpack without a field goal for the final eight minutes.

“Coach (Tom Livatino) always tells us to know our role,” Boehm said. “I do all the intangible things. I’m that scrapper guy, diving for loose balls, taking charges, getting rebounds.”

St. Ignatius sophomore guard Riley Doody scored at the 1:49 mark of the third quarter to bring the Wolfpack within one, 22-21, but Loyola senior guard Jack Byrne buried a 3-pointer eight seconds later. Loyola (16-5 overall, 7-2 conference) then locked down its defense to come away with the win and the Jesuit Cup. St. Ignatius dropped to 14-8 and 7-2 in the league.
